What would constitute a b d s m "date"

I am assuming here that not everyone uses "date" as a euphemism for "h--k up with a stranger." Dating is more that that -- it is about getting to know someone, with a view to assessing whether the person is good relationship material. So... what does that mean in a b d s m context? "Vanilla" dating, but bring up the subject to see if s/he is into it? For those who are, or have been, in an actual b d s m relationship -- or a relationship where you sometimes play b d s m -- how did you start out?
